Many women and men are joining the skin care industry as entry level estheticians because the job pays well and there is no lack of business opportunities. The aging generation of baby boomers are big spenders when it comes to skin care and beauty treatments as they want to preserve a more youthful appearance and enjoy an active lifestyle.

Depending on where you work, some esthetician working in medical offices as assistants to doctors are often paid a higher fixed wage while skin treatment estheticians in salons or spa studios are given commissions for bringing in more clients.

Note that even experienced estheticians are not considered medical doctors so they are not allowed to diagnose skin conditions, prescribe or suggest medications and treatment for any skin condition. For those working in medical offices with a licensed doctor, they can perform authorized treatments. Many experienced estheticians also partner with dermatologists to treat patients with acne and other facial skin conditions.

Many new estheticians are confused over what they can do and cannot do for their clients, due to the restriction imposed by the state. For example, a esthetician can only work and recommend cosmetic products and not prescription medication. This includes the following example such as performing facial treatments, deep skin cleansing, dead skin cell exfoliation, massages etc. Offer advice on how to take proper care of common skin conditions such as blackheads, acne, dry skin, wrinkles and recommend over-the-counter skin care products.

Be careful to avoid the following mistakes, which can be common for newly employed esthetician in entry level positions. Depending on the state, esthetician may or may not be allowed to perform cosmetic procedures such as Botox and Restylene injections, laser skin treatments, microdermabrasion and chemical peels etc unless under a doctor's recommendation and/or supervision. Avoid getting yourself into trouble by turning down customers with severely inflamed acne, such as cystic and nodulocystic acne.

To get started in an entry level job in cosmetic treatments, new comers must first complete between (depends on state requirements) 260 to 600 hours of course work and hands on training, pass both a written and practical test before they can become licensed estheticians. There are no strict minimum education requirements to become entry level estheticians although most employers will prefer at least a high diploma.
